Baja Mexico's San Antonio De Las Minas Cleans Up
By Bud Green
It is so rare, almost impossible to travel anywhere here in Baja California and not see trash everywhere. But one community stands out. Valle de Guadalupe, or in english, the wine valley. The cummunity, soon to be a small city, is San Antonio De Las Menas.
Now nothing like the Napa Valley in northern California, this small Baja California valley produces some of Mexic's finest wines. A popular local and tourist destination about a hours drive or so from the boarder and 15 minutes from downtown Ensenada, but in a world of its own.
This is one of my favorite areas to go mountain biking. Hours and hours of endless dirt roads and single track trails. Unlike the other areas that I ride, this valley is damn near spotless. No trash, in fact while shooting a recent edition of Trekking Thru The Baja Trash, I was hard pressed to find some garbage to talk about. So in turn, we did a flip flop, we turned the tide and are giving praise to the local government and people for keeping this beautiful area garbage free. We are not only here to point the finger but to show perfect examples of what a clean community can look like.
While biking and as well driving throughout the area, we have come across signs in many key and visable areas stating "No Tires Basura" meaning Do Not Throw Your Garbage Here. These signs are put there by the local government with the official City of Ensenada Logo on them.
This is so needed and not only here but in areas that now really need the help. The leaders of each community needs to use this example to educate their communities that this can be done. This is a wonderful thing to feature, this community and it's efforts. The positive effect of caring for your community, the look and the feel. is something we will continue to show off and praise.
So many people say that the 'trashiness', if you will, is because for the most part the people of Mexico are impoverished. I would have to disagree. I say poverty has nothing to do with it, it costs not a dime to put the garbage in a trash can for the garbage truck to pick up. People just need to have values, this is an easy thing to accomplish, we just need to show them the way and I feel confident they will follow and together we can all clean up Baja.
We commend the officials and the people of San Antonio de las Menas. The state of Baja California should be proud and if I have it my way, they will be presenting your city with a plaque for the the Cleanest Community in Baja.
We can only continue to educate, punish those that cannot abide by the law, to clean it up one time only and leave it that way. With the continued growth that is happening in this beautiful valley, we can only hope that the local people and the local government can keep up the commitment to keeping this area free from the garbage that the rest of Mexico has such a problem with.
I have as well chosen this edition of Trekking Thru The Baja Trash to take off the mask. I want to make a difference here, not to hide from it. I recieved many emails with wonderful advice, I am listening. I am not afraid. I plan to make a difference here and proide sollutions to community leaders and to do it in a mask, well, just not the right way to do it. I did get your attention tho! I am Bud Green, loud and proud!
